About our temple
Daihonzan Eiheiji Betsuin Hoanden Gokokuin is a branch temple of Daihonzan Eiheiji, the head temple of the Sōtō sect, located in Higashi Ward, Nagoya City. At our temple, zazen instruction is provided by Unsui (ascetic monk) from Eiheiji, allowing you to sit quietly and refresh your mind and body. At our Zen meditation sessions held on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, easy-to-understand instruction is provided even for beginners, allowing you to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and experience a deep sense of peace and concentration. Please come and experience a chance to regain balance in your mind and body.

What is Zazen?
Zazen is a traditional sitting meditation method in Zen Buddhism. Its purpose is to calm the mind and gain a deeper understanding of one's true nature. The word "zazen" means "sitting meditation" in Japanese.
Basic steps

1. Posture
-
Sit on a cushion called a zafu and cross your legs.
-
Straighten your back, place your hands on your knees, and lightly touch your thumbs together.
-
Eyes half open and gaze downward without focusing on any particular object.

2. Breathing
-
Breathe slowly and deeply through your nose.
-
Focus on your breathing and maintain a natural rhythm.

3. Mindset
-
Clear your mind of distracting thoughts and just focus on sitting.
-
Even if a thought comes to mind, you don't get caught up in it, but let it flow naturally.
Zazen has a positive effect on your physical and mental health, reducing stress and improving your ability to concentrate. We offer Zazen instruction that anyone can participate in with peace of mind, from beginners to experienced practitioners. Please come and experience it to improve your peace of mind and ability to concentrate.
